The pest deterrence layer of any guild. Volatile aromatic oils confuse the chemical navigation of aphids, whitefly, and cabbage moths — plant at guild edges, not tucked away in the center. Square stems and opposite leaves are the forager's ID shortcut; if it smells aromatic and has a square stem, you're almost certainly in a safe, useful family. Most members prefer well-drained soil and will rot in wet feet. Drought-tolerant once established — ideal for dry guild edges where irrigation does not reach.
