The most important family for biological pest control — flat-topped umbel flowers are landing pads for parasitoid wasps, hoverflies, and lacewings that control aphids and caterpillars. Let at least one plant per season bolt and flower. Warning for foragers: this family contains both edibles and deadly species — poison hemlock looks similar to wild carrot at certain growth stages. Never eat an Apiaceae plant you have not positively identified. Deep taproots break soil compaction — useful after heavy-feeding crops.
