Productive but demanding — rotate out of beds every 3-4 years minimum or disease pressure compounds fast. Late blight, fusarium wilt, and bacterial speck all persist in soil and target the whole family. Tomatoes are largely self-pollinating and easy to save seed from; peppers cross more readily and need distance isolation. Alliums and basil are classic companions — alliums suppress fungal disease, basil deters thrips. Green parts of all family members contain solanine alkaloids — do not compost green tomato or potato waste in systems with livestock access.
