The subtropical food forest workhorse. Guava, feijoa, jaboticaba, lilly pilly, and surinam cherry — aromatic leaves, edible flowers on many species, generally lower pest pressure than Rosaceae equivalents. Jaboticaba is uniquely productive: fruit grows directly on the trunk, so mature trees yield heavily in a small footprint. Feijoa is one of the most cold-hardy subtropical fruits — worth pushing into zone 8 with protection. Most members tolerate poor soils once established but need consistent moisture during establishment.
