Nitrogen deficiency shows as overall pale yellow-green growth, often starting on older leaves because nitrogen is mobile and the plant sacrifices lower canopy first. Stunting, thin stems, and lower protein in leafy crops follow. Legumes with poor nodulation can look like nitrogen lack even when soil nitrogen exists. Excess rain leaches nitrate; cold soil slows mineralization in organic systems.

Compare with sulfur deficiency, which hits young leaves differently in many species. Check roots for nodulation on beans and peas. Review recent rainfall and irrigation leaching events. Chlorophyll meter or tissue nitrate tests give faster answers than guessing from color alone on cultivars with naturally lighter foliage.

Organic Control Methods

Biological Controls

Legume cover crops with effective Rhizobium inoculation fix atmospheric nitrogen for following crops. Living mulches of clovers transfer nitrogen slowly through decomposition. Soil food webs mineralize organic nitrogen pools when carbon-to-nitrogen ratios allow. These pathways take weeks to months -- they do not fix acute starvation on a starving transplant overnight without amendments.

Prevention

Soil test and follow crop-specific nitrogen budgets. Split applications on sandy soils prone to leaching. Inoculate legume seed with fresh compatible rhizobia strains. Maintain organic matter so mineralization buffers mild shortages between fertigation events.

Cultural Practices

Incorporate composted manure or plant-based compost before heavy feeders. Side-dress vegetables at fruit set when symptoms or growth stage demand it. Avoid salinity buildup from repeated ammonium sources without leaching in arid greenhouse zones.

Mechanical & Physical

Mulch reduces nitrogen splash loss on slopes during storms. Stabilize rows against erosion that strips topsoil rich in organic nitrogen. For containers, repot rootbound plants that cannot access fertilizer solution evenly.

Organic Sprays

Fish emulsion and liquid kelp provide quick green-up when soil drenched or foliar applied per label. Nitrate or urea-based liquids allowed in your program can rescue acute cases -- still confirm deficiency first. Foliar urea on tree crops is a specialist technique with burn risk -- follow extension rates.
